What 맙 means
It is one Hangul syllable block, not a complete exclamation. Korean Hangul groups smaller letters into syllable blocks. In 맙소사, the whole word expresses startled disbelief, like “good heavens!”; 맙 alone does not carry that reaction.
Where does 맙소사 come from?
The exclamation grew from an older plea to God. 맙소사 developed from 하느님 마옵소서, roughly “God, please do not let it happen.”
맙소사 is first attested in the 20th century. Hangul was completed in 1443 and published in 1446 to make Korean easier to write.

1Why does 맙 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
