Hangul Syllable Maelb

3568/11172

맯 is a Hangul syllable block, so its meaning depends on the Korean word it appears in. Korean keyboard software, called an input method editor or IME, builds it from ㅁ, ㅐ, and the compound final ㄼ.

What 맯 means

맯 takes its meaning from the Korean word it appears in. It is built from the initial ㅁ, the vowel ㅐ, and the final ㄼ; that final cluster represents two consonants in one block.

Hangul was designed to make Korean easier to write and learn. The Sejong Annals record the creation of Hunminjeongeum in 1443; an explanatory book of the same name appeared in 1446. Earlier Korean writing relied heavily on Chinese characters and borrowed-character methods that could be difficult to learn. Hangul spread through Buddhist and Confucian texts and practical writing on famine, disease, martial arts, institutions, and law. In 1894, it became the official writing system for national documents.

The Phags-pa script, a square script created for Mongolian under Yuan rule in 1265 and promulgated in 1269, is a proposed influence on Hangul. Scholars debate that connection between writing systems; it does not establish that Phags-pa supplied this particular syllable.

How do I type 맯?

A Korean IME builds it from four keystrokes. Enter ㅁ, ㅐ, ㄹ, then ㅂ; the input method combines the last two consonants into the final ㄼ. On a standard 2-set Korean keyboard, the keys are a, o, f, q.

Unicode NFC stores 맯 as one precomposed syllable; NFD represents its initial, vowel, and final jamo separately. Both encode the same syllable, though an app or font may display the decomposed form differently.

Why does 맯 show as a box?

The app may lack a Hangul font or working fallback. This is a text-rendering problem: the character needs a font that can draw it.

A missing glyph may appear as a box, question mark, or blank space. Try a font with Hangul coverage or an app that uses system font fallback. Different fonts can draw the same block with slightly different shapes without changing its reading.

Neutral as a written syllable; the Korean word and sentence around it set the tone.

Why does 맯 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
