맮

hangul syllable maelm

Hangul syllable maelm

3567/11172

맮 is a Korean Hangul syllable block; by itself, it is a written syllable, not a complete word. It combines ㅁ, ㅐ, and the final consonant cluster ㄻ, so the Korean word around it supplies the meaning and can affect how the ending sounds. Hangul was designed to make Korean easier to write: its creation is recorded in 1443, and an explanatory book appeared in 1446.

What 맮 means

By itself, 맮 is a written Korean syllable, not a complete word.

Its block joins ㅁ (the starting consonant), ㅐ (the vowel), and ㄻ (the final consonant cluster). The label “maelm” names that written combination; it is not a word to translate. The cluster ㄻ can simplify at the end of a word or link to a following vowel, so you do not always hear its two consonants separately.

The creation record says Hangul answered a practical problem: Chinese characters did not represent Korean speech well, and the new letters were meant to be easy to learn and use daily. A court chronicle connects their shapes to Old Seal Script, an older Chinese script style; the explanatory guide describes consonant shapes through speech organs and vowel shapes through a sky, earth, and human scheme. The new script grouped consonants and vowels into syllable blocks and later became Korea's native alphabet.

How do I type 맮?

Enter its jamo in order with a Korean IME.

On a Korean 2-set keyboard, enter ㅁ, ㅐ, ㄹ, then ㅁ. The input method combines the last two consonants into the final cluster ㄻ at the bottom of the block.

Unicode also represents the syllable as the decomposed sequence ᄆ ᅢ ᆱ, which can compose as 맮 when normalized. Separate pieces may mean the text is decomposed; an empty box means the font or app cannot display a suitable Hangul glyph.

In Korean text, 맮 is ordinary spelling; by itself, it reads as a fragment.

Sent alone, 맮 can look like a mistyped or cut-off Korean word.

Why is 맮 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
