Text symbol

What 맨 means

Usually “bare”; separate 맨 can mean “first,” “top,” or “only.”

With nouns, 맨- marks a bare state: 맨눈 is sight without lenses. Spaced before position or order words, 맨 marks the extreme: 맨 위 “top,” 맨 처음 “first.”

Hangul was created to write Korean in 1443; its principles were documented in 1446. Older Korean forms, called Middle Korean, are recorded in 1517 and 1586; 맨-’s bare sense is linked to the older prefix 민-.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 맨 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
