hangul syllable man

Hangul syllable man

3533/11172

만 marks ten thousand or means “only” after a noun; its place in Korean text decides. It can also be a reading of different Hanja (Chinese characters used in Korean), so a lone syllable may be ambiguous.

Text symbol

What 만 means

Context separates the number from “only.”

Before 원 in prices, 만 marks 10,000 won; after a noun, 나만 means “only me.” Hanja 萬 means “ten thousand”; 灣 means “bay.”

Where did 만 come from?

Hangul was created for Korean speech.

Its first record is dated 1443; the Hunminjeongeum guide explained it in 1446. Seokbo sangjeol, a Korean Buddhist text, used Hangul for translation in 1447. Those dates concern the script, not the first appearance of 만.

Questions people ask

Why does 만 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
