What 맡 means
Alone it means nothing; its word decides everything. In 맡다, it covers taking responsibility, a role, luggage, or a place; in 맡기다, it helps mean assign or entrust. 냄새를 맡다 means to smell or pick up a clue.
맡다 is already found in Yongbi eocheonga, and the smell sense in Seokbo sangjeol, both from 1447. Hangul, the Korean alphabet that stacks letters into syllable blocks, was created in 1443 and promulgated in 1446. So 맡 is old vocabulary, not a new symbol meaning.

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
