What 멥 means
멥 alone is a syllable; 멥쌀 is the rice word.
Hangul was devised to write Korean speech more directly than Chinese characters, known in Korean as Hanja. Its creation is recorded in 1443, and Hunminjeongeum, a guide to the new writing system, appeared in 1446. Hangul syllables group letters into square blocks, but the letters themselves are not derived from Chinese characters.
A plain Korean syllable; the surrounding words set the tone.
If someone sends only 멥, don't infer rice: that meaning belongs to 멥쌀.
