What 물 means
It means “water.”
It keeps that sense in compounds: 물통 means “water container.”
The word predates Hangul
A 1103 Chinese-language glossary, the Jilin leishi, records it as 沒; southern place names used 勿 for water.
Hangul was designed for easier Korean writing. The first Hangul form, 믈, is recorded in 1446; ㅡ later shifted to ㅜ. In Three Kingdoms-era Goguryeo place names, 買 represented a regional water word.
