Hangul Syllable Mweo

3921/11172

뭐, pronounced mwo, is the everyday Korean word for “what?” In a message it usually asks for information, repetition, or clarification. The same syllable can also sound like “well…,” “huh?” or “oh well,” so the words around it decide the meaning.

What 뭐 means

뭐 means “what?” in everyday Korean. It points to an unknown thing or fact, alone or inside a longer question.

It is grammar, not decoration: an interrogative pronoun for something unknown. The modern form is tied to 무어 and the broader 무엇 line; research traces mwe to records from the 15th century. By the late 18th century, mwe was mainly an interrogative pronoun; by the late 19th century, it also had an indefinite use, closer to “something” or “anything.”

The family reaches further back: in Middle Korean, mwusun could stand alone in a way similar to mwe. Today 무엇 is the fuller, more formal choice and 무슨 normally introduces a noun; 뭐, pronounced mwo, is the compact conversational form. Copy it from the palette above.

someone sent me 뭐—what are they asking?

Read bare 뭐 as “what?” before treating it as anger. The rest of the message chooses between clarification, surprise, light pushback, and resignation.

After an unclear message it asks for repetition or explanation. At the start of a sentence 뭐 can soften the opening into a hesitant “well…” A study of Nonsan speech describes the related dialectal form 머 with different placement, so a regional spelling is not automatically a typo.

Politeness lives in the ending, not the syllable itself. Korean speech levels come from surrounding endings and the relationship, so 뭐예요? is safer with someone you do not know well than a bare 뭐?

Casual and context-sensitive: a plain question, a startled “huh?” or a shrugging “well…” depending on its neighbors.

A bare 뭐? to an unfamiliar senior can sound abrupt; add a polite ending when distance matters.

Why does 뭐 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
