hangul syllable mweom

Hangul syllable Mweom

3937/11172

By itself, 뭠 is one Korean syllable, not a word with a fixed translation; its meaning depends on the word it appears in. A 2011 report on regional Korean speech records it in 뭠니까, while the report’s standardized line has 뭡니까. A Korean keyboard composes it from its component letters.

What 뭠 means

Alone, 뭠 is a Hangul syllable, not a word. It has no fixed standalone translation. Hangul groups consonant and vowel letters into square syllable blocks; 뭠 combines initial ㅁ, middle vowel ㅝ, and final ㅁ.

A 2011 survey of Korean speakers from Uiseong living in Jilin, China, records 뭠니까 in a spoken question about a plant. The report’s standardized written version gives 뭡니까. This supports a regional transcript spelling, not a fixed meaning for 뭠 by itself.

Why was Hangul created?

Hangul gave people a direct way to write Korean. The earliest court record cited for its invention dates it to December 1443. Hunminjeongeum, a book explaining the writing system, appeared in 1446. Hangul let people record Korean thoughts without relying on Chinese characters, which many could not use for that purpose. The Korean government made Hangul its national writing system in 1894.

뭠 follows Hangul’s syllable-block design: its parts form one unit. Unicode stores it as one precomposed block and also defines an equivalent sequence written as separate letters.

Someone sent me 뭠—what should I read?

Ask what word or sentence the sender meant. A Hangul block contributes one syllable inside a Korean word, but the block alone does not identify the intended word. For standard Korean “what,” use 뭐; the final ㅁ makes 뭠 a different syllable.

Neutral as a Korean syllable inside a word; hard to decode alone without surrounding Korean.

For standard Korean “what,” use 뭐; final ㅁ makes 뭠 a different syllable.

Why does 뭠 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
