Hangul syllable 뮟

4000/11172

뮟 is a Hangul syllable built from ㅁ, ㅟ, and ㅊ; its word meaning depends on its Korean context. A Korean keyboard’s Hangul input method can assemble it from jamo, the letters that form Hangul. Its history belongs to the wider story of Hangul as a writing system.

What 뮟 means

Read it as one syllable inside its Korean word.

뮟 combines initial ㅁ, vowel ㅟ, and final ㅊ. The Unicode name element “mwic” labels those components; it is not a Korean word or a translation.

What is Hangul’s history?

It began as a writing system for Korean speech.

Hangul was created in 1443 and promulgated in 1446 to represent Korean speech directly, reduce reliance on Classical Chinese literacy, and support administration and public instruction. During the Joseon period, it carried a sometimes-dismissive label meaning “vernacular.” It later spread through private letters and literature and became the main script of modern Korean writing. Its square blocks group letters into syllables such as 뮟.

Phags-pa, a separate writing system, was developed and promulgated in 1265–1269. Some Korean scholarship proposes that its square layout influenced Hangul’s block arrangement. That is a debated structural connection, not evidence that Phags-pa is the ancestor of 뮟.

How do I type 뮟?

On a Korean 2-beolsik keyboard, enter anlc in a Hangul input method.

The input method reads anlc as ㅁ, ㅜ, ㅣ, ㅊ, combines ㅜ and ㅣ into ㅟ, and composes the syllable. A decomposed jamo sequence may be normalized into one block; some fonts or text systems display its parts separately.

A Hangul text syllable; read its parts as Korean spelling within the word.

Alone, 뮟 gives you a syllable without the surrounding word needed to interpret it.

Why does 뮟 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
