What 낼 means
It usually means “tomorrow” in a Korean message.
The National Institute of Korean Language lists 낼 as an adverb with 내일 as its original form. KBS guidance from 2016 and corpus guidance from 2023 treat it as a recognized shortening; use 내일 for the full form.
How did 낼 become a character?
It is a composed Hangul block, not a picture.
It combines ㄴ, ㅐ, and final ㄹ. Hangul’s 1446 documentation explains this assembly and its aim of making Korean easier to write than Chinese characters. A 2021 review reports older “tomorrow” records but disputed readings; as of 2026, no source checked here fixes 낼’s first written occurrence.
Conversational shorthand; choose 내일 for formal prose.
Read the Korean context; 낼 is not an emoji.

1Questions people ask
1Why does 낼 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
