What 낭 means
It gives you the sound nang, not a translation. 낭 is built from three Hangul letters, called jamo: ㄴ for n, ㅏ for a, and final ㅇ for ng. The word around it decides the sense: 浪, meaning wave, appears in 낭만 and 낭비, while 朗, meaning bright or clear, appears in 낭독.
Hangul itself was created to write Korean sounds more accessibly than Chinese-character workarounds, with its creation record in 1443 and explanatory publication in 1446. As of 2026, the sources reviewed identify no separate historical sign tradition for isolated 낭; its relatives are its jamo parts and Hanja-rooted words.
