hangul syllable nenj

Hangul syllable nenj

1322/11172

On a Korean 2-set keyboard, type S-P-S-W: ㄴ ㅔ ㄴ ㅈ; the input method composes them as 넩. This is a Hangul syllable block, not a whole word with a guaranteed translation. Its final cluster ㄵ is usually pronounced ㄴ at a word edge, while ㅈ can begin the next syllable before a vowel.

What 넩 means

Use a Korean 2-set keyboard: S-P-S-W.

On this layout, S produces ㄴ and P produces ㅔ; the last two keys enter ㄴ ㅈ as the final cluster. The Korean input method composes them into 넩. Other Korean layouts put the same letters on different keys.

What does 넩 mean?

It is a written Hangul syllable, not a built-in translation.

The block combines initial ㄴ, vowel ㅔ, and final cluster ㄵ. A Hangul block represents a syllable; the Korean word containing it supplies the lexical meaning.

The earliest documented record of Hangul is a 1443 entry in the Veritable Records of Sejong, a royal chronicle. Hunminjeongeum, the book explaining the script, followed in 1446. Hangul arranges initial consonants, vowels, and optional final consonants into blocks to represent Korean speech.

Why does the final ㄵ sound change?

Its pronunciation depends on what follows.

At a word edge or before another consonant, ㄵ normally sounds like ㄴ. Before a vowel, ㄴ stays at the end of the syllable and ㅈ begins the next syllable.

A system can store 넩 as one precomposed block or as three individual Hangul letters, called jamo: ᄂ ᅦ ᆬ. Unicode NFC joins that sequence into a precomposed block; NFD keeps the letters separate. The strings can look alike while software compares them differently, so normalize text before matching.

Neutral as writing; the Korean word around the syllable supplies its meaning.

At a word edge, ㄵ is not pronounced as two separate consonants; it normally sounds like ㄴ.

Can 넩 be stored as different Unicode sequences?

Yes. Unicode NFC stores the precomposed block, while NFD represents it as ᄂ ᅦ ᆬ. They can look alike but compare as different strings until normalized.

How is ㄵ pronounced in 넩?

At a word edge or before another consonant, it is normally pronounced ㄴ. Before a vowel, ㄴ stays at the syllable's end and ㅈ begins the next syllable.
