What 네 means
It usually means “yes”; it can also mean “pardon?” or “your.”
As a reply, 네 acknowledges a call, accepts a question or instruction, or asks for repetition when written as 네?. Before a noun, it shortens 너의, the Korean form meaning “your”: 네 마음 means “your feelings.” At the end of a request, 네 can also soften the wording.
Why can 네 mean yes or your?
Korean uses 네 as both a reply and a possessive form.
The National Institute of Korean Language lists reply 네 separately from shortened possessive 너의. A historical note traces 네 to the genitive form of 너 in Middle Korean; the genitive marks possession, as English “your” does. Later, 네가 takes the subject marker 가; historical examples of this pattern appear by the late 18th century. Because 네가 and 내가 (“I”) can sound alike in everyday speech, colloquial 니가 also appears for subject “you”; standard spelling is 네가.
As a reply, `네` is polite and deferential; it fits elders, superiors, and formal prompts.
Bare `네` acknowledges the exchange; it does not by itself promise enthusiasm.
Drift: A 2024 Korean-drama study found more `네` in public scenes in 2010s dramas than 1990s dramas; usage also varied by speaker gender and public or private setting. That describes the sample, not every speaker.

1Why does 네 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
