What 너 means
It means “you” for a friend or someone younger.
In Korean, 너 is a familiar, direct second-person pronoun. It carries more information about the relationship than English “you” does.
With an unfamiliar adult or someone senior, it can sound disrespectful. The sender’s relationship to the recipient matters.
Why was Hangul created?
To make Korean writing easier to learn and use.
Hangul was created in 1443; the 1446 Hunminjeongeum text explained its purpose and principles. It was designed as an accessible way to write Korean, rather than relying solely on Chinese characters.
A 1447 example of 너 appears in 석보상절, a Korean Buddhist text. The word remains in modern Korean.
Why can the block split into letters?
Because Korean syllables can be stored as a block or component letters.
너 is usually written as one precomposed Hangul block. Unicode also supports the same syllable as separate Hangul letters called jamo; text software can expose those parts during selection or normalization.
Plain and familiar: natural with a friend or someone younger, but potentially disrespectful to an unfamiliar adult or senior.
Avoid 너 as a neutral address for an unfamiliar adult or senior.
