What 늠 means

Its role depends on the full Korean word. In 늠름하다, it begins an adjective for a dignified bearing.

Hangul was devised in 1443. The 1446 Hunminjeongeum manuscript introduced the new script and explained how it could make Korean easier to read and write without relying on Chinese characters. Some early letterforms changed by 1447; Hangul became Korea's official writing system in 1894. Hangul groups its letters into syllable blocks: ㄴ starts 늠, ㅡ is its vowel, and ㅁ closes it.

Why does 늠 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
