Hangul Syllable Nyeong

1366/11172

녕, pronounced nyeong, is a Korean syllable rather than a standalone emoji: its familiar home is annyeong, the casual greeting between people who already speak casually together. In annyeonghaseyo and annyeonghi gaseyo/gyeseyo, the same block belongs to polite hellos and goodbyes, so 녕 alone reads as a fragment.

What 녕 means

By itself, 녕 is a syllable, not the usual Korean greeting. It is the second block in 안녕, whose Sino-Korean source 安寧 means peace, well-being, or freedom from trouble. The Korean Basic Dictionary defines 안녕 as a greeting used when friends or juniors meet or part; that social job belongs to the whole word, not to 녕 alone.

Its history has two layers. The Hanja 寧 carried older senses of settling and being at peace, while Hangul was created in 1443 and explained in 1446 to give people who could not write in Chinese characters an everyday script. So 녕 is an invented block from that Korean system spelling an older Chinese-derived sound, not a picture or an emoji.

When does 녕 become hello or goodbye?

The greeting comes from the whole word 안녕. In everyday Korean, 안녕 can cover both meeting and parting among familiar people; the Korean Basic Dictionary restricts that interjection to friends or juniors. A government teaching guide contrasts it with 안녕하세요, the polite hello, and 안녕히 가세요 or 안녕히 계세요, polite farewells whose wording tracks who leaves.

That welfare sense becomes social ritual in use: 안녕 works as either “hi” or “are you well?” depending on speech level and setting. A 2023 National Institute survey recorded 안녕 in greetings from several age groups and regions, so it is not a youth-only code.

How do I type 녕?

Type ㄴ, ㅕ, and ㅇ in a Korean IME. Hangeul composes consonant and vowel letters into one syllable unit, so the finished block may look unlike the separated letters you entered. The final ㅇ supplies the ending sound in nyeong; do not read the block as ㅕ alone. A font draws the glyph, so fonts can change its contours without turning it into an emoji.

Casual in bare 안녕; the longer ending lifts the greeting into polite Korean.

Bare 안녕 can sound overfamiliar to an elder, teacher, or stranger; use 안녕하세요 unless casual speech is already mutual.

Questions people ask

2

Is 안녕 polite enough for an older person?

Usually no. Bare 안녕 is casual; use 안녕하세요 unless you already have an established casual relationship.

Why does 녕 look different in different fonts?

It can. Hangul syllable blocks are drawn by fonts, so their contours vary without changing the text.
