뇬

hangul syllable nyon

Hangul syllable Nyon

1517/11172

뇬 is a Korean online spelling twist that can carry a gendered insult when directed at a woman. In a language discussion it can be a quoted example instead of a direct address; the changed vowel marks the style rather than a neutral spelling of “year.”

What 뇬 means

Here, 뇬 is a nonstandard online substitute for 년. It is a valid Hangul syllable block, but this use carries a gendered insult aimed at women. The middle vowel changes from ㅕ to ㅛ, a deliberate spelling twist rather than the usual form for the Korean word “year.”

Hangul was created in 1443, and its purpose and principles were explained in 1446 as an accessible writing system for Korean. 뇬 is a later online spelling substitution within that system. A 2002 newspaper report grouped altered forms such as 년뇬 under 외계어 (“alien language”), a playful label for deliberately changed online spellings; it described fun, distinctiveness, and peer identity as motives.

What does 뇬 mean when someone sends it?

If it targets a woman, read it as an insult. A 2023 analysis by the National Institute of Korean Language classifies 뇬 as a gendered insult. A playful tone does not soften it when directed at a person; in a quotation or discussion of Korean online language, it can be mentioned without targeting anyone.

Coarse and gendered when directed at a woman; mention it only in discussion or quotation.

Don't direct it at someone: changing the vowel does not soften the insult.

Why is 뇬 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
