Hangul Syllable Nyo

1513/11172

뇨 is Korean nyo, the syllable inside urine words like 당뇨. Hangul was first recorded in 1443 and explained in 1446 as a way to write Korean. Spelled 요 at a word's start, the same sound can be heard as [뇨] after a consonant, as in 담요.

Text symbol

What 뇨 means

It is “nyo,” the Korean reading for 尿.

뇨 stacks ㄴ plus ㅛ into one block. Hangul was made to write Korean speech directly, so this block has no separate origin story. Normalization can split it back into those two jamo.

뇨 lives inside Sino-Korean words such as 당뇨; at a word's start the same reading is spelled 요, as in 요소. After a consonant, written 요 can sound [뇨]: 담요.
