What 요 means
As an ending, 요 marks polite, conversational speech. It shapes how the speaker addresses the listener; the words before it carry the main message. In 좋아요, 좋아 carries the sense “good” or “I like it,” while 요 adds the polite ending.
Hangul was created in 1443 and formally introduced in 1446 to make Korean easier to write than with Chinese characters. The 1446 guide to the alphabet includes ㅛ among its original vowels; its design is related to ㅗ. Those dates concern Hangul and its vowel system, not the emergence of the polite ending.
What does 요 mean when someone sends it?
Read a lone 요 as insufficient context. If someone sends only this syllable, it does not tell you what phrase they intended or whether they are answering, correcting, or continuing a thought. Use the surrounding exchange to decide.
A 2023 study of spoken Korean describes optional -요 inside an utterance as a discourse marker. It can link parts of a turn, focus a topic or point, add emphasis, or give the speaker time to continue, so it does not always mark the end of a sentence.
해요체 is the conversational polite style marked by endings such as 요; it is less formal than Korean’s most formal speech style.
Do not read a lone 요 as a self-contained emotional reaction.
