Hangul syllable Yong

The Korean syllable 용 can mean “dragon” on its own; in compounds, it can instead belong to roots for use or courage. It is a Hangul syllable, so it writes Korean speech rather than drawing a dragon.

What 용 means

Alone, 용 usually means “dragon.” The Sino-Korean word 용 corresponds to Hanja 龍, a Chinese character also used in Korean; 미르 is the native Korean word for dragon. By contrast, -용 marks intended use or audience, while 용기 means courage. Read the whole word.

Hangul was made to write Korean: its creation was recorded in 1443, and Hunminjeongeum, a guide to the writing system, was published in 1446. Records describe rain rites during the Silla period in early Korean history; later traditions link dragons with water, fishing protection, royal power, and good fortune. These are dragon traditions, not meanings carried by every 용.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 용 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
