Hangul Syllable Olm

6703/11172

옮 is a Korean Hangul syllable used inside words about moving, transferring, or carrying something over. In 옮기다, it keeps a final ㄻ in writing but is pronounced [옴], which is why you hear “om” while seeing 옮. It is Korean text, not an emoji reaction.

What 옮 means

It is a Korean syllable used inside words about moving or transferring. 옮 is normally a piece of a word, not a complete reaction. In 옮기다, it belongs to a Korean verb for physical movement, changing location or affiliation, shifting attention, translating, putting plans into action, and spreading something.

Hangul is a writing system, not a set of picture symbols. It was created in 1443 and explained in a 1446 book so Korean could be written more directly, packing sounds into blocks. 옮 is one of those blocks: initial ㅇ plus vowel ㅗ plus final cluster ㄻ.

How do I type 옮?

Use a Korean IME and enter ㅇ, ㅗ, ㄹ, ㅁ in order. On the standard two-set layout, that is d h f a; the IME composes the four jamo into one syllable block. There is no separate combine key.

If you see ㅇㅗㄹㅁ spread apart instead, Korean input is off or composition has not finished. Fonts can draw the finished block differently, but that is a rendering detail, not a different reading.

Why is 옮 pronounced om?

The final ㄻ is written but simplifies to [ㅁ] in 옮기다. Standard Korean lists 옮기다 as [옴기다] and 옮겨 as [옴겨]. The spelling preserves the stem while speech simplifies the cluster.

That same transfer idea extends beyond luggage: you can move a seat or address, shift your gaze, put speech into writing, translate a text, carry out a plan, or pass on a rumor or illness. The isolated block does not mean “move” by itself; the complete Korean word supplies the grammar and sense.

As a standalone glyph, 옮 reads as Korean spelling, not as a pictorial reaction.

If you hear [옴], check the whole Korean word before spelling it.

Is 옮 an emoji?

No. It is a Hangul syllable block, so its meaning comes from Korean spelling and context, not from emoji artwork.

What does 계옮 mean?

It means moving an account. A 2025 Korean fan-term glossary records it as 계정 plus 옮기다 for replacing an old account with a new one; that shorthand is niche fandom usage.
