What 팣 means
It is an older spelling of the Korean red-bean word 팥.
Middle Korean also wrote the red-bean word as ᄑᆞᆾ, a sequence of older Hangul letters rather than one modern syllable block.
The cookbook Joseonyorijaebeop uses 팣 in 팣죽, red-bean porridge, and 팣떡, a red-bean rice cake. In both names, 팣 identifies the ingredient before the food.
Why does 팣 appear instead of 팥?
The final consonant differs: ㅊ in 팣, ㅌ in 팥.
Standard Korean spells the ordinary red-bean word 팥. A study of Korean sound patterns analyzes that word through both ㅌ- and ㅊ-ending forms, treating the variation as part of its history rather than a separate meaning.
As of 2026, a discussion of Yukjin, a regional Korean variety, reports 팣 as a regional form. That is reported usage; it does not make 팣 the standard spelling.
What if someone sends 팣 alone?
Treat it as a spelling clue and check whether 팥 was intended.
If the message is about an old text or Yukjin speech, preserve 팣 as written. In an ordinary modern sentence about red beans, 팥 is the expected spelling.
Marked in standard Korean; neutral when quoting older sources or describing reported regional speech.
For the ordinary modern red-bean word, use 팥.
