What 패 means
The full Korean word gives 패 its meaning.
패하다 (“be defeated”) and 패배 (“defeat”) use 敗; 문패, 위패, and 상패 use 牌 in words for a door nameplate, memorial tablet, and award plaque. Hanja are Chinese characters used in Korean; Hangul alone leaves the root unstated.
패 combines consonant ᄑ and vowel ᅢ; Unicode can also encode the same syllable as 패. Hangul, first called Hunminjeongeum (“proper sounds for teaching the people”), was devised by King Sejong in 1443; an explanatory book appeared in 1446 to make Korean writing more accessible.
