What 팘 means
It is a Korean syllable block, not a word by itself. It combines the consonant ㅍ, vowel ㅏ, and final cluster ㄽ (two consonant letters at the bottom of the syllable). The surrounding word gives it meaning; Unicode’s label “Pals” is a romanized syllable name, not an English translation.
Hangul was created during Joseon, a historical Korean kingdom, so Korean could be written more directly than with Chinese characters, which did not represent Korean speech as closely. A record of its creation is dated 1443; the explanatory book Hunminjeongeum Haerye appeared in 1446. Hangul letters, called Jamo, join into syllable blocks. Chinese characters belong to its historical setting, not to the construction of 팘. Hangul is the alphabet used to write Korean.
How do you type 팘?
With Korean Dubeolsik input active, press v, k, f, then t. Those keys produce ㅍ + ㅏ + ㄹ + ㅅ; the last two combine as the final cluster ㄽ.
The conjoining-Jamo sequence 팘 is another Unicode representation of the same syllable. NFC normalization, Unicode’s composed form, can combine it into 팘.
Why can 팘 look different in different fonts?
Its outline can vary by font; the syllable stays the same.
Hangul typefaces fit the starting consonant, vowel, and final consonant into a syllable square, so spacing and strokes can vary. A font without suitable Hangul shaping support may display 팘 as separated Jamo. Try a Hangul-capable font or use the precomposed block 팘 when the sequence appears split.
Neutral as Korean spelling; by itself, 팘 reads as a fragment rather than an expression.
If someone sends it alone, ask for the surrounding Korean word or sentence.

1Why does 팘 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
