hangul syllable pan

Hangul Syllable Pan

10001/11172

판 is a Korean Hangul syllable read pan, not a symbol with one fixed meaning. In a word it can name an arena or unfolding scene, a performance setting, a board, or an edition/version; the surrounding Korean word decides. A lone 판 needs context, so do not treat it as a reaction token. In older administrative Korean, 판(判) could mean a ruler's decision.

What 판 means

It depends on the Korean word around it.

판 is a Hangul syllable block, not a pictograph with one built-in idea. Hangul was designed to represent Korean speech through initial, medial, and final components; the National Hangeul Museum records the first notice of the script in 1443 and publication of its explanatory book in 1446. For this exact syllable, the sources do not establish a first spoken or lexical attestation: 1443–1446 dates the writing system, not the word 판.

That distinction explains the spread of glosses. In compounds, 판 can evoke an active arena or communal scene, a physical board, or an edition or version. The same pronunciation also appears in 판(判), the historical administrative term for a ruler's decision.

Why does 판 change meaning in compounds?

The neighboring word supplies the sense.

정치판, 놀이판, and 굿판 use 판 for an arena or event space; 판소리 joins it to 소리, the Korean word for sound or singing, and names singing made in that setting. 초판, 개정판, and 현대판 use the edition/version sense. A related idea is 마당, an open communal place; the cultural encyclopedia also compares 판 with 바탕 when it means an unfolding event.

The meanings have institutional histories too. In Goryeo–Joseon administrative records, 판(判) named a ruler's final decision; during King Sejong's reign, official royal documents shifted that term to 교, although 판부 and 판지 remained in later records. The oldest recorded form of 판소리 is a 1754 poem by Yu Jin-han, after which the performance tradition developed into stage forms and modern reinterpretations.

Someone sent me 판 — what do I read?

Read the surrounding Korean, not the glyph alone.

By itself, 판 does not tell you whether the sender means a scene, a board, an edition, or a ruling. If you are reading Korean through English, choosing one gloss for the isolated syllable can send you in the wrong direction.

The standard two-set Korean layout composes the block as you enter its three jamo, the individual Hangul letters. If the pieces stay separate, check that Korean input is active or copy it from the palette above.

판 is ordinary Korean text; its tone comes from the compound, from communal and lively to administrative or technical.

Do not translate a lone 판 as “board” or “arena” without its neighboring Korean.

1

Why does 판 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
