What 푀 means
푀 is a Korean syllable whose meaning comes from its word.
In a Korean word or name, surrounding syllables supply its meaning. If someone sends only 푀, ask which word or sentence it belongs to; the single block cannot tell you their intent.
Hangul, the script this block belongs to, was devised in 1443 by King Sejong so Korean could be written in its own script. Before it, people recorded Korean with adapted Chinese characters through methods called Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal. Hangul was first called Hunminjeongeum; a 1446 book of that name explained its design. Buddhist scriptures and practical and literary books helped spread it. It became Korea's official national writing system in 1894, then lost that status under Japanese rule in 1910.
Why does 푀 show as a square?
It is a font or shaping issue.
Unicode can store a Hangul syllable as one precomposed block or as equivalent combining letters (jamo). If your app or font lacks Hangul characters or cannot join the letters, 푀 may appear as a square, blank, or separate letters; the display failure does not change the text.
Neutral Korean text; alone, it is a syllable or fragment, so the surrounding message carries the writer's tone.
Don't read a solitary 푀 as a reaction; ask what Korean word or phrase it belongs to.
Questions people ask
2Why is 푀 a box on my screen?
It is a font or app display problem: the font may not include Hangul characters, or the app may fail to join the letters into a block. Try a Korean-capable font or app.
푀 or 표: are they the same?
No. 푀 joins ㅍ and ㅚ, while 표 joins ㅍ and ㅛ, so they are different syllables in ordinary Korean. A Korean dialect entry revised in 2025 lists 푀 as an alternative form of 표; that is a regional word form, not a general spelling swap.
