hangul syllable pyenj

Hangul Syllable 폕

10198/11172

As of September 2026, 폕 has no established standalone Korean word meaning. It is one Hangul syllable block built from an initial consonant, a vowel, and a compound final consonant; a Korean word around it supplies the lexical meaning. A Korean IME can assemble it from jamo.

What 폕 means

On its own, it has no established Korean word meaning. Unicode represents 폕 with ᄑ, ᅨ, and ᆬ: three jamo, or Korean letters that form a syllable block. They mark the initial consonant, vowel, and compound final consonant.

Inside a Korean word, 폕 can serve as one syllable, but the word around it provides the lexical meaning. If someone sends only this block, ask for context instead of assigning it a slang meaning.

With Korean input active, enter ㅍㅖㄴㅈ; the IME joins the jamo into one block.

Why was Hangul created?

To write Korean more directly. The earliest evidence for Hangul is a record from the end of 1443; the Hunminjeongeum, the book introducing the script, was published in 1446. It offered a way to write Korean directly instead of relying on Hanja, Chinese characters adapted for Korean writing, which had made literacy harder to access.

Hangul developed alongside Hanja and earlier Korean writing practices such as idu, a way to write Korean using Chinese characters. This history does not establish that 폕 descends from any particular Hanja character. Sanskrit, Uighur, Tibetan, and Phags-pa writing traditions are discussed as possible influences, but surviving documents do not establish a clear borrowing trail.

Hangul later became the standard Korean writing system; Hanja remained in use among scholars, while broad adoption came in the early twentieth century. The script is called Chosŏn'gŭl in North Korea and Hangeul in South Korea. That naming and adoption history concerns Hangul as a whole, not a special meaning for 폕.

Can a sequence of jamo represent the same Hangul syllable?

Yes. Unicode also permits this syllable as the canonically equivalent sequence 폕; text shaping can display that sequence as the same block.

Is pyenj the Korean pronunciation of 폕?

No. Pyenj is part of Unicode's English character name; it is not a pronunciation guide or an established Korean word.
