What 폈 means
폈 appears in past forms of 펴다.
펴다 means to open, spread, straighten, or put forward. 책을 폈다 means “opened a book”; 허리를 폈다 means “straightened one’s back.” With 주장 (an argument) or 정책 (a policy), it can mean putting forward an idea or carrying out a policy. The surrounding noun gives the sense.
Hangul, the Korean alphabet, was devised in 1443 and its principles were explained in 1446 to make written Korean accessible to more people. An early work in it, 용비어천가 (“Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven”), dates to 1447. Hangul groups letters into compact syllable blocks; the square layout resembles Chinese-character writing, but the letters are Hangul.
Is 폈 the right form for “I smoked”?
No. Use 피웠다 with 담배.
For a cigarette, standard Korean uses 피웠다, not 폈다. 폈다 and 폈어요 are forms of 펴다, as in 책을 폈다 (“opened a book”).
Neutral in 펴다 forms; nonstandard with 담배 for “smoked.”
With 담배, write 피웠다.

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
