Hangul syllable Pyes

On a Korean 2-set keyboard, type V, ShiftP, then T to form 폣. Its documented uses are historical; in an isolated modern message, it may be a typo or a quotation from an old text.

What 폣 means

폣 is a Hangul syllable block with historical uses. Hangul was devised in the 15th century to record Korean speech and reduce reliance on Chinese characters. This block joins the initial consonant ㅍ, vowel ㅖ and final consonant ㅅ (받침, the consonant at the bottom) into one syllable; it is a combination in the writing system, not a separate emblem.

An exact written use appears in the 1481 first edition of the Du Shi Eonhae, a Korean translation with notes on Du Fu’s poetry. It appears in 어즈러이폣, whose annotations give context-bound glosses for ideas such as spreading, swelling, opening, stretching and turning over. A 1489 medical text also uses it in a passage about coughing. These examples do not establish one timeless definition: their readings depend on the surrounding text.

How do I type 폣 on a Korean keyboard?

On Dubeolsik, press V, ShiftP, then T. Dubeolsik is the Korean 2-set keyboard layout: V enters ㅍ, ShiftP enters ㅖ, and T enters final ㅅ. A Korean IME (input software) holds that consonant at the bottom of the block. If you type a vowel after it, the IME may move ㅅ to the start of the next block, so stop after T for 폣.

Unicode can store the same visible block in two equivalent forms: NFC keeps 폣 as one precomposed syllable, while NFD decomposes it into jamo, the Korean letters that build syllables. If text that looks identical fails an exact match, normalize both strings to the same form before comparing.

Is 폣 a typo or an old spelling?

It could be either; the surrounding message decides. As of September 13, 2026, no established standalone chat meaning is supported for 폣. A 2021 Korean newspaper-text cleanup report lists it among characters at high risk of being errors. In a modern message without a historical cue, check whether the writer meant 펫; in a quotation from an old text, preserve the spelling.

Historical and technical; in casual chat, read it by context rather than assuming it is slang.

If the writer meant “pet,” 펫 is the Korean spelling of that English loanword; its vowel ㅔ differs from 폣’s ㅖ.
