What 랊 means
It identifies a syllable, not a full word. ㄹ starts it; ㅏ is its vowel; ㄿ closes it.
Why are Hunminjeongeum and Hangeul both names?
They are names from different stages of the script’s history. Before Hangul, Korean writing used Chinese characters and systems that adapted them to Korean, including Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal. Hunminjeongeum means “correct sounds for teaching the people”; eonmun means “vernacular writing.”
Records suggest Hangeul was in use by the early 1910s; after the public holiday became Hangeulnal in 1928, the name spread widely.

1Why does 랊 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
