What 랑 means

It links nouns or marks a companion. In Korean, 랑 is a short particle attached to a noun. A following noun makes a list; before an action, it means “with.” When should I use 랑 instead of 이랑? Use 랑 after a vowel-ending noun; use 이랑 after a consonant-ending one.

The Korean writing system Hangul was created in 1443; its principles were published in 1446 to help people unfamiliar with Chinese characters write Korean. Hangul builds syllables from letter blocks; 랑 is one block.

Casual, conversational Korean.

Is 랑 too casual for formal writing? Yes: choose 와/과 for a formal notice.

Why does 랑 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
