What 립 means
At a word’s start, some South Korean words write 립 as 입. 립’s meaning depends on its hanja (a Chinese character used in Korean). For 立 (“stand; establish”), 입법 uses 입; 설립 keeps 립.
Hangul, the Korean alphabet, was created in 1443 to write Korean without relying on Chinese characters; its purpose and principles were explained in 1446. The 1527 Korean primer Hunmong Jahoe records 립 for 立, linked to Middle Chinese, an older form of Chinese.
