What 림 means
Its Korean word determines its meaning.
King Sejong devised Hangul in 1443 for daily writing. The 1446 guide, Hunminjeongeum Haerye, describes syllable blocks and its designers’ study of Chinese sound scholarship and the Mongolian Phags-pa script. 림 is one block built by that system.
Why does 림 become 임?
South Korean spelling follows a start-of-word rule. For words built from Chinese characters, initial 림 may be written 임; inside the word, 림 remains.
