What 려 means
By itself, 려 gives you a syllable, not a reliable translation. Its reading is written “ryeo” in Latin letters; its parts are the consonant ㄹ and the vowel ㅕ. To translate it, read the whole Korean word or sentence around it.
Hangul was designed to make Korean easier to write and learn for people who could not master the Chinese characters then used to write the language. The script was completed in 1443 and promulgated in 1446. 려 is one of its syllable blocks.
Studies comparing Middle and Modern Korean describe forms containing 려 in different grammatical roles: as a dative marker, showing a recipient or goal, in one analysis, and as an inflected form in another. These are roles of larger word forms; they do not give 려 alone a fixed modern translation.
Why does 려 sometimes appear split?
The split can be one syllable stored as two letters. Unicode can break 려 into two Hangul building blocks: the conjoining jamo ᄅ (U+1105) and ᅧ (U+1167). NFC (Unicode Normalization Form C) joins that pair back into one syllable. The compatibility jamo ㄹ and ㅕ are different characters, so NFC alone will not turn that pair into 려.
A Korean input method can also leave composition unfinished or insert standalone jamo. The display alone does not tell you whether the text was decomposed or the keyboard inserted separate characters.
Inside a Korean word, 려 is an ordinary syllable; alone, it lacks enough context for translation.
Do not translate a lone 려 as a complete Korean word.
Questions people ask
1Why does 려 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
