What 력 means
It has no single standalone meaning; read the full Korean word. In Sino-Korean compounds—Korean words built from Chinese-origin roots—능력 means ability, 경력 means career history, and 양력 means solar calendar. 력 marks a syllable, not one shared English meaning.
Hangul was created in 1443 to make writing more accessible, and a 1446 book explained its purpose and principles. This block combines the letters ㄹ, ㅕ, and ㄱ; Hangul calls these component letters jamo.
Why is 력 written as 역?
South Korean spelling can change word-initial 력 to 역. The initial-sound rule writes 역사 for history. Inside words, you see 력 in 수력, meaning hydropower, and 협력, meaning cooperation. This is a spelling rule, not a font error.
North Korean spelling retains 력 at the start of 력사, the same history word. The contrast is between written standards; it does not change the word's meaning.
In a Korean word, 력 is neutral; the surrounding word sets the tone.
A lone 력 is not enough to translate as power; ask for the surrounding word.
