Why does 략 become 약? In South Korean spelling, the element from Chinese character 略 is 약 in 약식 (“abbreviated form”), but 략 in 전략 (“strategy”) and 개략 (“outline”). Medieval Korean writing also used ㄹ at word beginnings, so this spelling pattern developed over time.
