What 렴 means
Context decides 렴's meaning. As -렴, the ryeom ending gently permits or mildly orders and lowers the listener in speech level: 오렴 and 쉬렴 suit a senior speaking to a child or junior.
Hangul was completed in 1443, then explained in Hunminjeongeum in 1446 to make Korean easier to write and learn. 렴 is one stacked block built from jamo, in the tradition Hangul added alongside Hanja. As of 2026, no separate origin for this one block surfaced.
As -렴, it is gentle but speech-level-lowering: use it downward, not upward.
Do not aim -렴 at a boss or elder.
