What 련 means
South Korea uses 연 at word start; North Korea keeps 련. Many Korean words of Chinese origin follow this rule: 연습 in South Korean spelling and 련습 in North Korean spelling both mean “practice.”
Hangul was designed to make Korean easier to write without relying on Chinese characters. The earliest official record of its creation is from 1443; Hunminjeongeum, a manuscript explaining the alphabet, dates to 1446.
