What 섬 means
It means “island.” It is a full noun and one written syllable.
Older forms: 斯麻 in King Muryeong’s tomb inscription (525 CE), セマ in the Japanese chronicle Nihon Shoki, and 苫 in a 1124 embassy account about Goryeo, a Korean kingdom. Korean records use 셤 in the 15th century, later 섬. These forms reflect the word’s sound changes.
Hangul, the Korean alphabet, builds syllable blocks with an initial consonant, vowel, and optional final consonant. The 1446 Hunminjeongeum guide explains this; 섬 has all three.
