What 슴 means
Press the component letters in order, not a special symbol key.
On a US-QWERTY Windows Korean layout, those letters are T, M, and A. The IME assembles them as you type, so the in-progress block can change before the committed syllable appears.
Hangul was created in 1443 and published in 1446 to give Korean speakers a practical writing system; it joins initial, medial, and final letters into syllable-shaped blocks. No separate first attestation for this exact block was established in this research pass, so its honest origin story is Hangul's creation and later use, not a supposed inventor of 슴.
What does 슴 mean?
It has no fixed English meaning by itself.
It is the syllable ㅅㅡㅁ, read roughly seum. Korean dictionary entries show how context supplies the meaning: 웃음 is laughter or a smile, 여름 is summer, and 이름 is name. The same block can sit inside unrelated words without carrying one shared translation.
Its real historical relatives are the jamo positions that build it: ㅅ as initial, ㅡ as vowel, and ㅁ as final — not visually similar CJK characters. Unicode's segmentation rules keep the precomposed block and its jamo equivalent together for syllable boundaries and line breaking.
Can 슴 signal a writing style or dialect?
Sometimes, but only inside a recognizable Korean context.
In a 2025 answer, the National Institute of Korean Language defines 음슴체 as an online style that ends sentences with noun-form endings such as -음 or -ㅁ. The name contains 슴, but that does not make 슴 alone a chat suffix or a translation.
A 2007 National Institute description of Hamgyong speech records endings such as -슴둥 and -슴메. That is regional grammar, not a general meaning for a lone character. If someone sends only 슴, ask for the surrounding Korean instead of inventing a translation.
Neutral in Korean writing; a lone 슴 is incomplete without context.
Do not translate 슴 alone as laughter, summer, or name.

1Why does 슴 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
