Hangul Syllable Sum

5673/11172

숨 is the Korean noun for breath or breathing. Common phrases use it for breathlessness, feeling stifled, relief, and—in one euphemism—death; the full phrase decides which. The syllable block combines ㅅ, ㅜ, and ㅁ.

What 숨 means

숨 is the Korean noun for breath. It also means breathing, and in some contexts describes a vegetable’s remaining crispness or vitality. In 숨이 가쁘다, it can mean being out of breath or figuratively rushed and under pressure; 숨이 트이다 describes relief when a stifling situation opens up.

Hangul was designed to write Korean directly. It was completed in 1443 and published in 1446. Before Hangul, Korean writing used Chinese characters and systems such as idu, which adapted those characters to represent Korean words and grammar. The word 숨 is recorded in 1447 in Seokbo sangjeol, a Buddhist text written in early Hangul.

숨 is one ordinary syllable in that writing system, built from ㅅ, ㅜ, and ㅁ. Earlier Korean writing systems are part of Hangul’s historical setting, not visual ancestors of this syllable.

What does 숨 mean when someone sends it alone?

By itself, 숨 names breath; it is not a full message. Read it literally until the surrounding words or sentence supply the point. A one-block message does not tell you whether the sender means a sigh, a pause, or something else.

The serious turn comes in a phrase: 숨을 거두다 is a euphemism for dying, while 숨 돌리다 means taking a breather. Read the whole phrase before replying; the same word can appear in a message about relief or death.

Why does 숨 appear as one block?

The block combines the Hangul letters ㅅ ㅜ ㅁ into one syllable.

With a Korean input method, enter those three letters in order and it assembles them into 숨. Unicode can store the syllable as one prebuilt character or as a sequence of its component letters.

The two forms may look alike but compare as different character sequences until normalized. If a tool splits 숨 into separate letters, the encoding changed, not the Korean reading.

Neutral Korean vocabulary; the phrase around it sets the tone.

In 숨을 거두다, 숨 is part of a euphemism for death.

Why can the same-looking 숨 compare as different text?

They can have different underlying sequences: one prebuilt syllable character or three Hangul letters. Unicode normalization is a text-processing rule that can treat these equivalent forms alike; a raw character-by-character comparison may still distinguish them.

Can 숨 mean life?

Yes. The compound 목숨 means life. By itself, 숨 normally means breath or breathing; the life sense comes from the larger word.
