What 숩 means
Its meaning comes from the full Korean word around it. In 숲, the standard word for “forest,” final ㅍ is pronounced like a p held shut at the lips, without a release of air, at the end of a syllable or before a consonant. That makes 숲 and 숩 sound alike in that position, though the spellings differ.
Before Hangul, Korean was also written with Chinese characters adapted to Korean in systems called Idu, Hyangchal, and Gugyeol; Hangul introduced its own letter system for representing Korean speech. A 1459 Korean text, Worin seokbo, records the forest spellings 숲 and 숳. That documents the history of the forest word, not an independent standard spelling 숩.
Someone sent me 숩—what are they saying?
A single syllable is too little to translate confidently. In ordinary Korean text, 숩 takes its meaning from the larger word. Alone, it could be a typo for 숲 or a note showing the word’s pronunciation.
A 1987 Korean dialect study records a Jeonbuk regional form of an animal-word prefix, with examples such as 숫소 (“bull”) and 수캐 (“male dog”). A prefix is a word part added at the start; this regional pattern is not a general chat meaning for 숩.
Neutral inside a word; alone, 숩 looks marked beside the standard spelling 숲.
For the standard Korean word “forest,” use 숲; 숩 is a sound match, not its standard spelling.
