Hangul Syllable Sup

5683/11172

숲 (sup) is the everyday Korean word for forest or woods, short for 수풀. Alone it means a literal grove of trees, while 숲을 이루다 describes things packed dense like trees. Say “sup” alone, but the final ㅍ shifts once endings follow.

What 숲 means

It means “forest,” “woods,” or a wooded place. 숲 is short for 수풀, thicket. The word is documented from the 15th century, with older spellings including 숩 and 숩ㅍ and the related Middle Korean noun 숳.

숲 is one stacked Hangul block, not an invented picture-sign. Before Hangul, Korean was written with Chinese-character systems; Hangul’s 1443–1446 creation made Korean easier to write, and 숲 is spelled from three jamo in that system.

Why does 숲 sound different in 숲을?

The final ㅍ moves into the next syllable before 을.

Type ㅅ, then ㅜ, then ㅍ and a Korean keyboard composes 숲. 숲을 pronunciation is [수플], while 숲 안 is [수반].
