Text symbol

What 숰 means

It spells one syllable, romanized as “suk.” Its parts are initial ㅅ, vowel ㅜ, and final ㅋ, called 받침 in Korean.

Why was Hangul made?

To make Korean easier to write.

Hangul was designed to make Korean easier to write because Chinese characters did not fit spoken Korean neatly. A 1443 record credits King Sejong; the 1446 Hunminjeongeum, a guide to Hangul, explains its letters and syllable blocks. Earlier names included Jeongeum and Eonmun, then Gukmun and Gukseo; “Hangeul” spread as the script’s name in 1928. Some scholars propose influence from Phags-pa, a square script used under Mongol rule; this remains a proposal, not an established derivation.
