Hangul syllable 숙

5658/11172

숙 is a Korean syllable whose meaning depends on the word around it. 숙제 means homework, 숙녀 is a formal word for a woman, and 익숙하다 means to be familiar or accustomed. It can also appear as one syllable in a given name, where different Hanja (Chinese characters used to write Korean) can carry different meanings.

What 숙 means

It has no single meaning on its own. Treat 숙 as a sound-and-spelling block, not a word to translate by itself. In 숙제 it belongs to the word for homework; in 숙녀 it appears in a formal word for a woman; 익숙하다 means to be familiar or accustomed.

Hangul, the Korean writing system, was created in 1443; an explanatory manuscript called Hunminjeongeum was published in 1446. The system was designed to make writing Korean more accessible than the Chinese-character methods then in use. Like other Hangul syllable blocks, 숙 is formed from jamo, the consonant and vowel letters of Hangul.

Is 숙 a Korean name?

Yes, 숙 can be one syllable in a Korean given name.

A 2014 report on Korean birth-registration lists includes 영숙 and 정숙 among girls’ names in 1958, and 미숙 in 1968. Those examples can make 숙 feel tied to older generations’ names, but that association is not universal. Hanja are Chinese characters used in Korean writing; ask which Hanja someone uses if the name’s exact written meaning matters.

How do I type 숙?

On the standard two-set Korean layout, type t, n, r.

Those keys enter ㅅ, ㅜ, ㄱ; the Korean input method editor (IME) joins them into one syllable block. If they remain separate, check that Korean input is active.

Neutral as a syllable; the surrounding word or name sets its tone.

Alone, 숙 can read like an unfinished fragment; use the surrounding word or name to interpret it.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ㅅㅜㄱ appear instead of 숙?

A representation difference. Unicode permits a precomposed Hangul syllable block or its decomposed jamo sequence; an app or normalization step can leave the jamo separate. Korean input or NFC normalization, Unicode’s canonical-composition form, can produce the block when the receiving system expects it.
