What 숯 means
숯 means wood charcoal in Korean.
Evidence in Korea places charcoal use at about 2,600 years ago. Archaeological evidence includes charcoal kilns from around the 3rd–4th centuries. Charcoal heated homes, cooked food, ironed clothes, and fueled metalwork; records from Silla, an ancient Korean kingdom, connect it with rice cooking and the casting of Buddhist images and bells.
In older Korean customs, people placed charcoal in soy-sauce jars and on ropes marking a birth as a measure associated with cleanliness and protection. The more formal Korean term 목탄 (木炭) also means wood charcoal.
