What 식 means
The whole Korean word sets the meaning. 식사 and 음식 trace to 食 (“food”); 결혼식 and mathematical 식 to 式 (“form, ceremony”); 인식 to 識 (“knowing”). These Chinese characters are called hanja in Korean.
Hangul was created in 1443 and explained in 1446 to write Korean more directly. Earlier methods—Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal—used Chinese characters to write Korean; Hangul builds syllable blocks from letters.
Neutral as a syllable; the completed word sets the tone.
식 alone does not identify the intended root.
