Hangul syllable Si

5853/11172

Korean si (시) has no single English equivalent: it can mark an hour, mean “poem” or “city,” or appear inside an honorific verb. The surrounding word or sentence tells you which job it is doing.

Text symbol

What 시 means

Its meaning depends on its word and grammatical role.

In Korean, si appears in 세 시 for “three o’clock,” 사고 발생 시 for “if an accident occurs,” 서울시 for “Seoul City,” and 시를 쓰다 for “write a poem.”

If you received only 시, the fragment is too little to translate confidently; ask for the surrounding phrase.

Where did 시's meanings come from?

시 is a Hangul block built from the letters ㅅ and ㅣ.

The Korean writing system Hunminjeongeum was designed to write Korean speech. Its first record is dated 1443, and its explanatory book appeared in 1446; those dates belong to Hangul as a system, not to a known first use of this block.

In 1527, Hunmong Jahoe, a book for learning Hanja (Chinese characters used in Korean), associates 詩, 時, and 市 with the Korean reading 시: poem, time, and city. These are vocabulary links, not visual ancestors of the Hangul block. The city sense also has an administrative history: Unified Silla had five secondary capitals; the modern local-government label took shape after 1949, and mixed city–county jurisdictions appeared in 1995.

When does 시 show respect?

Inside -(으)시-, 시 marks respect for the subject.

In 선생님이 오세요 (“The teacher is coming”), -시- honors the teacher; -요 makes the sentence polite to the listener. Respect toward the person spoken about and politeness toward the listener are separate choices.

Do not add -(으)시- just to make every phrase sound more courteous. Korean language guidance dated 2026-06-29 flags 주문하신 커피 나오셨습니다 when the coffee itself receives the honorific; this cautions against that use, not every inanimate referent tied to a person.

The syllable itself sets no politeness level; its grammatical role can carry honorific force.

Do not add -(으)시- to honor the coffee itself.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 시 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
